Apple Product Mural — Richmond, Melbourne
Project overview
The concept involved creating a hand-painted mural for the launch of Apple 15 at a site in Richmond, Melbourne. While visually distinctive, the approach carried considerable risk because Apple requires all products and finishes to be represented with precise colour accuracy.
The challenge
Once the concept was approved, the artist needed exact pigment specifications to reproduce the product colours faithfully at a large scale. Unlike printed artwork, the final result depended on individually mixed paints, the artist’s interpretation and changing environmental conditions.
Preparation
The lead-up to the four-day on-site painting process involved a series of planning meetings, colour reviews and assessments of drawdowns and painted samples. This preparation allowed the creative team, artist and stakeholders to resolve colour and production concerns before work began on the final mural.
My role
I oversaw the production process and maintained regular on-site checks throughout the painting. My responsibility was to ensure the execution remained faithful to the approved artwork, that product details were accurately represented and that each colour matched the required specifications.
Working outdoors introduced additional scheduling and environmental considerations, although favourable Melbourne weather allowed the painting to proceed as planned.
Outcome
The completed mural successfully translated the approved product artwork into a large-scale, hand-painted installation without compromising Apple’s exacting colour standards. The project was extremely well received by the Global Marketing team and demonstrated how careful preparation, specialist collaboration and ongoing quality control can make an ambitious creative concept possible.
